August 2008 - MPI Releases Canadian Economic Impact Study

This week MPI released a landmark study on the economic impact of meetings and events on the Canadian economy. It is the first study to utilize the United Nations World Tourism Organization’s (UNWTO) new measurement methodology, and represents a tremendous accomplishment for Canada, the Meetings and Events industry, and MPI and the MPI Foundation Canada. This study shows the tremendous scope and magnitude of the meeting industry as a driver of Canadian economic activity.

For MPI this research is an important extension of our commitment to build a rich global meeting industry community by providing human connections to knowledge and ideas, relationships, and marketplaces. The knowledge delivered by this research establishes the economic value of our industry on the overall economy, and the tremendous impact and reach industry professionals have in executing their duties. This impact goes well beyond the numbers highlighted in this study. The true measure of the value of our industry doesn’t end at economics, but reaches through to the results achieved and the people affected. The results of this study underline the huge potential for meeting professionals to positively impact individuals, organizations, and communities by focusing on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and the triple bottom line of people, planet, and profit. By providing information and tools to support the implementation of environmentally sustainable practices and best-in-class programs MPI leads the profession towards positive impacts on all fronts – economic, environmental, and personal.
